CHALLENGE

How do you double the number of women in engineering by 2030?

As of 2017, only 15% of Manitoba’s newly licensed engineers are women.

So how can we change the ratio?

The answer is we can’t. But the kids can.

STRATEGY

Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba partnered with schoolboards across the province and empowered students to become an army of change...

But first, the army needed a uniform –

EXECUTION

We created a series of shirts that, thanks to a partnership with Shopify, could only be purchased by students who managed to solve the challenging math or science problem emblazoned on the front.

We took grade-9 curriculum, and let students use their brainpower as buying-power…

From there, student leaders postered their schools with thousands of petitions.

The petitions struck a chord, garnering thousands of signatures.

So, we packed them up in a way that couldn’t be ignored.

And we hand-delivered them to the CEOs of Manitoba’s largest engineering employers….

Which inspired Manitoba’s engineering community to take action.

RESULTS

Our campaign led to the formation of the Manitoba 2030 coalition – a standing committee comprised of representatives from each of the engineering firms we petitioned.

Engineers Canada put us on their agenda too.

The media took notice.

Other universities and companies asked to join the initiative.

Best of all, students have a seat at the table too.

Helping develop the policies and tactics that will ensure more women enter the engineering field.

Their goal? Ensure that 30% of newly licensed engineers are women by 2030.
